Conference Carer Support Fund

What is the LMS Conference/Event carer support fund?

It has been identified by staff that attendance at external conferences and events and training can pose difficulties for those with caring responsibilities. With this in mind a fund has been identified to which those with caring responsibilities can apply for a small budget (£200 maximum) to fund, for example:  additional childcare costs incurred by attending an external event (which impacts their usual caring responsibilities); contribution to the additional cost of a partner/relative and child joining a member of staff at a conference to provide childcare support.

The Dean and Heads of Departments in are supporting the launch of the Conference Carer Support Fund. It will be introduced as a small-scale project within the five departments and one centre in the Medical School with a view to adoption more widely across the university if deemed successful by participants.

This initiative will be led by Professor Melanie Davies and will be supported by the professional services team.

The funds aims are to:

  • Assist those unable to attend external meetings and conferences due to carer commitments which will require additional financial support.
  • Enable continued attendance at external meetings/events  which may prove difficult with caring responsibilities.
  • Assist staff to sustain effective networking opportunities outside the university.
  • Support staff with caring responsibilities to continue interaction, networking and collaboration at a national and (where funds allow) an international level.

Target Group

Whilst initiated by the Athena SWAN team, this initiative is open to all research and academic colleagues (depending on the success of the initiative we hope to be able to extend it in future to support staff, administrative and technical staff).

How do I apply to this fund?

The fund will be administered by the Athena SWAN Network and led by Professor Melanie Davies.

Applications should be submitted in the format described below. A very short summary is requested of those who receive an award to identify whether it was helpful and to help us assess the usefulness of the initiative.

Applications will be accepted throughout the year and a short report will be reviewed at the LMS CMB Athena SWAN Committee in December 2015. A sub group of the LMS AS Network will assess applications. The members are: Professor Melanie Davies (Diabetes), Margaret Crawford (College Business Partner) and Professor Nicola Cooper (Health Sciences). There is a total budget of £1000 available this year.
