Message from the Dean

Phil Baker photo Professor Philip Baker Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Head of the College Life Sciences

I am passionate about providing a modern environment for study and research in the College of Life Sciences that incorporates the principles of gender equality in all that we do. We have been developing and implementing policies and systems that challenge gender stereotypes across all aspects of our work, from teaching and learning, research, outreach and reward and remuneration to develop an environment that has gender equality at its core. Such a culture, and the consequent sustainable programme of change has benefits for all staff in the College, enabling us to attract high quality students and staff and identify our College as a progressive and innovative workplace that mainstreams gender equality in all of its activities. In November 2019 we submitted our first College application for a Silver Athena SWAN Award, this application was a culmination of many years of gender equality activity in the College in which we had achieved five Departmental Silver and two Bronze Athena SWAN Awards. Working collectively on a College submission has reinforced our commitment to further embed an innovative and far reaching College-wide gender equality action plan that encompasses all aspects of College activity”.
