Registration is essential:

All staff are invited to the launch of the College of Life Sciences (CLS) Mentor Connect Scheme. 'Mentor Connect' is an extension of the established College of Life Sciences mentoring scheme, recently enhanced to include mentor-mentee matching, and mentors for all staff groups.

This informal event will include an opportunity to meet some of our mentors, network with colleagues and to participate in discussions on common mentoring themes about your career or working life. Find out what having a mentor could do for you, how to find one and the benefits of mentoring others.

In 2019, all CLS departments received mentee and mentor training, resulting in a doubling of our pool of mentors. Feedback from staff was that all staff groups were interested in the benefits of having a mentor, and that some people would like help with finding one, hence the development of Mentor Connect.

This event is open to all CLS staff, including professional services, research, and academic staff, at any career stage.


Mentoring is the critical role and responsibility assumed by an experienced employee who agrees to help, build a relationship with, and facilitate the professional growth of one or more colleagues.


For the mentee, mentoring can be a ‘career friend’. Mentoring might suggest the sponsorship of a junior colleague by a senior colleague, or be seen as a relationship amongst equals in which someone is helped to develop themselves by a member of their peer group.

Being mentored can:

–reduce the stress of transition to a new role
–speed up the learning of a new job or set of skills
–promote the socialisation of new staff
–increase productivity –increase motivation, confidence, and reflection
–help to articulate issues in a conscious and thoughtful way
–provide a way of seeing through difficulties

Finding A Mentor

To become a mentee, please attend a mentoring training session and then you can contact prospective mentors listed on the 'Mentoring Database' or the 'Mentors' web page. On the database you can use search terms (by topic, job type or department) to find a mentor.  We have mentors from all backgrounds including academia, research and professional services.

E-mail any of the mentors on the database if you would like them to act as your mentor. See 'Suggested e-mail text' below for a suggestion on the text you could use.

'Dear Colleague,

I have identified you as a prospective mentor on the College of Life Sciences database. I am looking for support in (mentee to add criteria) and would like to arrange a first meeting to discuss these further. Would you please suggest a convenient time and date?
