Electron Microscopy Facility

Welcome
Electron microscopes, whether of the transmission (TEM) or the scanning (SEM) type, relate to the study of specimen ultrastructure at levels of resolution that transcend the modest possibilities attainable using light microscopes. Additionally, for many specimens the superior depth of field achieved using a SEM makes it the instrument of choice, even at quite low magnifications.
We are accustomed to tackling routine problems with specimens ranging from the microbiological to the geological. Particular expertise is present in a number of areas such as ultramicrotomy (ultrathin sectioning of resin embedded specimens), immunolabelling of specific sites within tissues and negative staining of macromolecules, bacteria or viral samples. We also have critical point drying available for SEM.
The Director and the staff are always happy to discuss either brief ‘service’ or longer collaborative arrangements. Please contact us for a copy of our current charging rates outlining the costs and basis upon which work can be undertaken.
The facility is located on the lower ground floor of the Adrian Building (Office: LG27). The facilities and services are available to academic, research staff and students (graduate and undergraduate).
The Facility resources may also be available for use by other institutions and commercial organisations. Projects can only be accepted after full details of the project are supplied, charge rates will be determined at this time. The completion of an Analytical Services Agreement will be expected.
If you publish results obtained using the EMF please mention the EMF in your acknowledgements and send a reference to us. This will make securing of future funding for the EMF easier. View our Access Conditions
The maintenance of the facility is funded by access charges.
