In his inaugural lecture Dave will explore the role of men in nursing. In Western society the number of men entering the nursing profession remains static at around 10-12%. Drawing upon his thirty-year career as a nurse, his doctoral thesis (which explored sexualities and masculinities in nursing) and contemporary research, he will debate the reasons why so few men become nurses. With so many nursing vacancies in the UK, are men an untapped healthcare resource? What can be done to make nursing more attractive to men in contemporary society? How can our new MSci Nursing with Leadership programme contribute to NHS England’s transforming perceptions of nursing and midwifery project?

Dave is a nursing academic who has substantial experience of working in research intensive universities and who has undertaken a number of senior roles including Deputy Head of School for Education and Students, Associate Director of Undergraduate Nursing and Professional Head for Children’s Nursing. His clinical background is adult and children’s critical care. A strategic thinker who has a proven record of leadership and innovation in Higher Education. Dave’s scholarly work related to equality and sexualities in health care and clinical simulation. Appointed to the University of Leicester in the role of Foundation Professor of Nursing, a role underpinning the formation of the new School of Allied Health Professions and our flagship programme: MSci Nursing with Leadership dual registration (adult and mental health nursing/child and mental health nursing), an undergraduate, pre-registration programme.
