Lecture Synopsis

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease which can lead to reduced quality of life and a number of serious complications including blindness, amputation, heart attack and stroke. Type 2 diabetes develops gradually and can be symptomless for many years, therefore many people already have complications at diagnosis. Earlier diagnosis and treatment may prevent these complications. Type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed if those at risk of developing the disease are identified and offered support to change their lifestyle. It is estimated that 5 million people are at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes in England. This talk will show how we can identify people with undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes and those at risk of the disease and why doing this is a good idea!

Biography

Laura is a Professor of Medical Statistics. She has worked at the University of Leicester since 2008, when she joined the Diabetes Research Centre as a post doc. In 2011, Laura was awarded a lectureship in the Biostatistics Group in the Department of Health Sciences and has continued to collaborate with the Diabetes Research Centre. Laura is passionate about improving the way we design and analyse research studies in order to improve health care and ultimately outcomes for patients as efficiently as possible. Laura’s research falls within three main areas: (1) developing and validating statistical models for identifying risk; (2) the design and analysis of clinical trials; (3) evidence synthesis, i.e. how best to bring evidence together. She conducts research using these methods in a number of clinical areas. Out of work she is a devoted Aunty – a role she takes very seriously, a planner of holidays and an awful runner.
