Professor Jon Barratt gave his inaugural lecture on 27 March, titled:

‘IgA nephropathy-50 years on, where do we go next?’

Lecture Synopsis

2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the first description of the kidney disease IgA nephropathy, which is now recognised as the most common glomerulonephritis in the world. The lecture reviewed how our understanding of this common cause of kidney disease has changed over the past 50 years, in particular highlighting the ground breaking research conducted here in Leicester, how we have used this knowledge to design new treatments and what we can expect in the next 50 years.

Jonathan qualified in 1992 from the University of Manchester and obtained his PhD in 2000 in Molecular Immunology at the University of Leicester. He leads the Renal Research Group within the College of Life Sciences and heads the Mayer IgA Nephropathy Laboratories which comprises a 20 strong laboratory and clinical research team. In the past 5 years he has been awarded over £3M of funding as PI for research in the pathogenesis of IgA nephropathy. Jonathan is the IgA nephropathy Rare Disease Group lead for the UK National Registry of Rare Kidney Diseases (RaDaR) and a member of the steering committee of the International IgA Nephropathy Network.
