Part of the Professorial Inaugural Lecture series

'The Science of Reading'
Professor Kevin Paterson, NPB

Professor Paterson's lecture was held on Thursday 16 March 2017 at 5.30pm in the FKMLT, Henry Wellcome Building.

Professor Paterson spoke about how our lives are dominated by the written word. For the individual, being able to read well is of fundamental importance for normal educational development, and essential for people to function effectively and to meet everyday demands of living, working and citizenship. However, reading is a learned skill that involves the orchestration of complex cognitive and motor behaviours that move the eyes across the page and enable readers to recognise individual words and assign meaning to text. In his talk, Kevin outlined the basic components of reading and showed how reading behaviour changes with age and adapts to the visual and cognitive demands of different writing systems.
