The Washington Post (15 March 2020) quoted Prof. Hansell about possible linkages between levels of air pollution and both the susceptibility of people to COVID-19 infections, and the severity of those infections.

Both smoking and air pollution exposure increase the risk of heart and lung disease and people with these conditions are more at risk of severe forms of COVID-19. This raises a hypothesis that smoking/air pollution may directly worsen outcomes but this needs to be evaluated in further studies.
