The Need

The need for the Centre for Medicine is clear and significant.

The centre is an important development for the health needs of the local population in Leicester, as well as the East Midlands as the area is characterised by ethnic and cultural diversity and large disparities in economic prosperity and health between different communities.

Life expectancy in Leicester has improved, but it is still 2.5 years below the national average and is ranked as the 25th most deprived local authority area out of 326 according to the Indices of Multiple Deprivation 2010 with 41% of Leicester’s population living in 20% of the most deprived areas in the country.

Revolutionise Patient CareAn estimated 50% of Leicester’s population are from black and minority ethnic backgrounds and suffer a significantly higher emergency hospital admission rate for both diabetes and coronary heart disease (CHD). Figures indicate that the risk of emergency hospitalisation is 79% higher in the Asian population than the White population for diabetes and 32% higher for CHD.

As well as a diverse population, the UK has an increasingly ageing population with a growing number of people with multiple health problems, severely straining many NHS services. In attempting to deal with this many health services have lost the ability to look after patients in a caring fashion which has been highlighted in recent reports such as the Francis Report.

The wide diversity of Leicester’s population, together with our proven clinical and academic research excellence is why Leicester leads in addressing these national healthcare challenges.

The centre will provide an improvement on the current space used in the Maurice Shock Building, allowing the delivery of a dynamic new curriculum and bringing academics, researchers and students together for the first time in a  central hub that will lead to new knowledge and breakthroughs benefitting patients and communities locally, across the UK and worldwide.
