How alumni can help the University of Leicester

If you would like further information on any of the below roles, please email alumni.relations@le.ac.uk

RoleFunction
Alumni Association Standing Committee Member

The Standing Committee is a channel of communication between the University and the Alumni Association. It is elected annually and meets quarterly, mainly in Leicester. It comprises a Chair, the immediate past Chair (if they so wish) ten members, and up-to five co-opted members (to include a representative from the Governing body of the Students’ Union).  Additional persons may also attend the meetings as Guests of the Committee.

If you would like to seek election to the Standing Committee, please email us.

Alumni Ambassadors

An Alumni Ambassador will be the primary local contact for the University in a specific region or country. Ambassadors can support the University by mentoring current students, assisting with student recruitment, helping with country or regional events and visits by University staff or opening doors to companies or educational and philanthropic organisations.

If you are interested please email us telling us why you would like to take on the role and tell us a little bit about your relationship with the University. We will then contact you for a further discussion.

Alumni Chapter (Lead)

The Chair (President or lead person) for an alumni chapter will help establish a chapter and thereafter be responsible for ensuring all activities are delivered in line with the associated chapter’s and the University’s mission. S/he will chair meetings and help manage the general workload of the chapter and its officers. Every chapter should have this role as a minimum.

Alumni chapters are social and/or professional networking groups organised by, and for, University of Leicester alumni. They help to bring fellow graduates together to participate in local activities and events, in a fun and friendly environment.

Alumni Chapter (Member)

The University of Leicester seeks to be as inclusive as possible and to welcome not only alumni but their friends, family and colleagues to participate in activities and events. Alumni chapters are encouraged to do the same. Members of alumni chapters, however, will primarily be graduates of the University of Leicester. Alumni chapters offer a range of roles where members can get involved in planning and management, including secretary, treasurer, member secretary etc.

Alumni Student Mentors

The Professional Mentoring Scheme matches University of Leicester students with industry professionals and alumni to mentor and support a student’s transition into their chosen career. The scheme is for students who are looking to gain further insight into a particular industry or career path.

Alumni are able to sign up to become mentors. If you are interested please email us.

Student Recruitment Support

Alumni can assist with our student recruitment effort by helping at local schools (especially their own former school) or at ACAS Recruitment Days. They can give a talk at a school about their time at University and how students can apply and make the transition. They can also talk about their own time at Leicester and the course the subject they were studying.

If you would like to discuss how you could support student recruitment, please email us.

Alumni Event Organiser

Alumni can volunteer to host an event at their house, their company or another location for fellow alumni as a means to establish an alumni chapter, to provide other practical assistance or to broker relationships with useful contacts for the university.

If you would like to host an event of this type, please email us.

Alumni Profile

If an alumnus has a positive and interesting profile or a more recent success story, we want to know. We can interview alumni in more depth, or make a video about their career and life after leaving Leicester.

Social Media Advocate

The Alumni Relations team manages a range of social media channels. If alumni want to follow, re-tweet, invite others to follow and shout about the fact they are proud to be an alumni of the University, they can do so here:

Facebook: /leicesteralumni

Twitter: @leicesteralumni

Instagram: @leicester_alumni

Links to a Charitable Foundation

If an alumnus has a link to a charitable Trust or Foundation we would like to know as they might be able to assist with an application from the University to that Foundation.  Are they a Trustee? Do they know any Trustees? Have they received a grant from a Foundation so that they may have favourable links with a Foundation member of staff?

Opportunities via an alumnus’ company or business

The University of Leicester is always seeking to make contact with companies that can offer student placements, work experience, internships or sandwich years.

If an alumnus is able to offer any of the options described, they should email chris.shaw@le.ac.uk in the first instance.

Fundraising on behalf of the University or making a gift

Fundraising activities come in all shapes and sizes - from bake sales to marathons to skydives. Alumni could take part in an event open to the public, such as a sponsored marathon, or break the mould with an event that is entirely their own.

At the University of Leicester, alumni can support causes ranging from research into SCAD heart conditions to tackling blood cancers; from providing scholarships to students with high potential to opening up access to the Arts for disabled or disadvantaged children.
