On 25 July, the University of Leicester Alumni Relations team headed to London Heathrow to board a plane to South East Asia. Over the course of the next two weeks, the team travelled to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong, where a total of almost 300 alumni attended events held at stunning venues and hotels within each country.

In Singapore, we had the privilege of meeting Philip Wong, alumnus and General Manager of the Dorsett Hotel, who ensured our visit was enjoyable. He very generously provided one night’s free accommodation at the Dorsett Hotel as a prize for alumni at our event in the City.

The team were then joined by Professor Turi King, Leicester alumna, and Professor of Public Engagement and Reader in Genetics and Archaeology at the University, who gave a fascinating talk in both Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong. Turi provided an insight into the discovery of the mortal remains of King Richard III, the last Plantagenet King of England, and talked about the early stages of the Grey Friars project, from planning the dig, through to the excavation.

The events gave our alumni the chance to reconnect and share stories and memories of their time at Leicester over drinks and canapes. The trip also provided a great opportunity for us to build relationships with alumni and hear about what they have been doing since graduation. We had some fantastic conversations and it was great to find out about the interesting careers and ventures our alumni have embarked upon.

Throughout our trip, we also had the pleasure of catching up with alumni on a one to one basis through meetings. We were overwhelmed with the warm response we received and all of our alumni were highly enthusiastic and keen to get involved in the opportunities available to them at the University. Alumni were particularly interested to hear about our Professional Mentoring Service and were encouraged to join their new dedicated online social platform, Leicester Connect.

Discussions around the development of Alumni Chapters in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong led to exciting ideas and plans and we are looking forward to working with those who showed an interest in setting these up. Alumni were also keen to hear about recent developments at the University and plans for the forthcoming centenary, and shared valuable ideas and thoughts on how we can serve our alumni better, demonstrating a strong and lasting connection with the University.

The Development and Alumni Relations team will be visiting alumni around the world over the next 18 months. Dates and locations will be listed on the events section of our website and alumni will be able to find out more information and register their attendance.
