Women of Influence Scholarship

Women of Influence Scholarship awarded to Chemistry student

There are many Leicester graduates who are women of influence – graduates who are making a significant impact on the world through their high aspirations and career successes.

The University regularly celebrates these achievements with annual networking events and has recently launched the Women of Influence Guild, which raises crucial funds to support women scientists and students whilst they study and carry out research at the University.

In October 2013, a Women of Influence Lunch raised almost £7,000 for a Women of Influence Guild Scholarship for Post-Graduate Study to support a female student undertaking an MSc within the College of Science and Engineering. The application process for the scholarship was rigorous with applicants providing a supporting statement detailing why they had applied for the scholarship and how it would benefit them and their studies.

The first ever recipient of the scholarship is Chemistry graduate Emily Durham who graduated in the summer of 2014 with a BSc in Chemistry and who will be returning to the Department of Chemistry in September to study for an MSc in Green Chemistry.

The scholarship Emily received will cover her MSc tuition fees and includes a cash award of £1,200 to assist course related expenses.

Emily is extremely grateful for the opportunity: “I am passionate about Chemistry and was keen to continue my studies at a higher, more focused academic level in such an important and topical aspect of Chemistry. In today's economic and environmental climate, it is more critical than ever to undertake research for greener synthetic industrial chemical processes. After completing a synthetic research project in the third year of my BSc, I was eager to undertake a chemical research project that was not purely theoretical, but also had direct relevance and application to the chemical industry. I was delighted to have been selected by the Women of Influence Guild, as it is exceptionally difficult to obtain funding for postgraduate courses and I am extremely grateful to the Guild for this fantastic opportunity.”
