Departmental Safety Self-Inspections
Departmental Safety Inspections are an important part of the University’s health and safety arrangements. This course looks at the role of these inspections and their contribution to the safety, health and welfare of University staff, students and visitors and instructs inspectors on inspection methods, reporting procedures and remedial actions.

Risk Assessment Training

This course consists of two elements, the 'Principles' aspect of the workshop reviews the requirements for risk assessments and risk assessment procedures, and the 'Practice' aspect covers examples of risk assessments and assessment strategy.

Radiation Safety Training
This course covers two main areas, the awareness of the safety problem and the legal framework. Firstly the awareness of the safety problem which includes the external hazards of Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Neutron and X-ray emitters, internal radiation hazards and basic protection principles as well as radiation effects on the body and the risks. Secondly we discuss the legal framework such as the basic requirements of the Radioactive Substances Act 1993 and the Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999. This part of the session also covers the position of the Environment Agency and the Health and Safety Executive, as well as the main points of the University of Leicester Radiation Protection Rules.
