New file and image upload restrictions in Plone

As part of the continuing efforts to improve the performance of the University of Leicester website, new file and image upload restrictions are to be introduced to the Plone content management system. As of Thursday 24th June 2010 there will be a limit to the size of files and images that can be uploaded to Plone. The aim of this is to improve page loading times and the overall performance of the system. This will result in an improved experience for all website users.

File Restrictions

Files (including Word documents, PDFs, PowerPoints etc) will no longer be able to exceed the maximum file size of 5 megabytes.

Image Restrictions

Images will no longer be able to exceed the maximum file size of 1.5 megabytes and the maximum image dimensions of 1000 x 1000 pixels.

Please note

  • The new image restrictions should generally not cause a problem to Plone users because all images should be optimised for the web before being uploaded to Plone.
  • There is documentation in the Imagery section of the Web Centre website that explains how to correctly prepare and save your images.
  • The file size restrictions must also be considered when uploading files and images using Enfold Desktop (an application for performing bulk file and image uploads).
  • Files and images uploaded to Plone before the restrictions have been implemented will not be affected by the change, even if they exceed the limitations, and will continue to work correctly.

Any questions?
