First Year
In the First Year you will follow a common curriculum of six modules spread over two semesters. Social Change, Identity and Behaviour introduces you to the discipline, and The Sociological Imagination encourages you to think critically about the social world. Society in Transformation covers a wide range of substantive topics such as crime and deviance, work and leisure, education and training, and family life. Research Methods 1 introduces you to strategies for social investigation, while Work, Employment and Society and Ethnicity and Society explore two important sociological topics in greater depth.
Second Year
During semester one of the Second Year you will take modules in sociological theory, research methods and inequality in modern Society. Research Methods 2 extends your methodological expertise, Classical Sociological Theory investigates the origins of the discipline and Class and Social Inequalities explores the idea of equity and the distribution of life-chances in our society. In semester two you can choose three of the optional modules listed below.
Third Year
In the first semester of the Third Year you will take a further module in sociological theory, Modern Sociological Theory, and choose another optional module. In semester two you can select two further optional modules. You will also conduct a research project on a topic of your choice. You will be assigned a member of academic staff to act as your personal supervisor for both semesters. To support you in this task, there will be research project workshops and individual supervisions on offer throughout the year.
