Psychology at Leicester

The principles guiding the syllabus are to provide a wide initial coverage and steadily increasing depth of study in the various topics, taking into account the importance and topicality of any specific material. In the Final Year you will be able to specialise in topics of particular interest.

An integral part of the course is the teaching of research methodology and students acquire competence in the use of statistical methods to analyse data from experiments in the laboratory and in the field. In your Final Year you will be given the opportunity to use these skills to conduct an original research project under the supervision of a member of the teaching staff who specialises in the area of psychology your research is focussed on.

All of the academic staff in the School of Psychology are enthusiastic psychologists engaged in active research programmes in their various fields of expertise. This has a direct impact on the teaching programme, not only because you are being taught by experts in their field, but also because it affects whom you may be working with on your Final Year project.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

Lectures are the primary teaching tool at Leicester, supported by interactive tutorials and practical sessions in the computer laboratories. A typical undergraduate will have between eight and twelve contact hours per week, with twice as much time spent again on the required background reading and private study. Every student is invited to our lively seminar series, given by visiting speakers from the UK and around the world, highlighting new and exciting research in a wide number of areas in this expansive subject. A mixture of continuous assessment and examinations will be used to examine and test undergraduate knowledge, with coursework contributing approximately one-third of all grades earned.

Skills Gained

You will develop academic skills in oral and written communication, information retrieval and the evaluation of research. You will also develop generic skills in IT as well as specialist skills in data interpretation and analysis. Practical laboratory and project work will build your skills in team-working, laboratory techniques and the use of statistical and research methodology. Collectively this will enable you to design and undertake experiments and other empirical investigations.

Graduate/Career Opportunities

Our graduates go on to have successful careers in a wide range of areas including clinical psychology, educational psychology, occupational psychology and forensic psychology, which are available due to the accredited status of our degrees. From the more traditional roles such as human resources to an untypical career within the perfume industry employing psychometric skills in scent sense, our graduates have the attributes required by a wide selection of industries. Around one in four will progress to studies at a postgraduate level; Master’s degrees can be taken in the fields of forensic psychology, cell physiology or clinical criminology. Gaining a teaching qualification with a PGCE is another popular choice ranging from primary education to secondary education specialising in the diploma. Progression to higher studies with research degrees at doctorate level is also possible with an undergraduate degree from Leicester.

The Differences Among the Courses

The main difference between the courses is that in single-subject Psychology you will spend 100% of your time studying Psychology whereas for the Psychology with Sociology you will spend two-thirds of your time studying Psychology and one-third of your time studying your second subject. The Psychology with Cognitive Neuroscience degree has the same First Year as the single honours course, but then will increase in specialisation in the Cognitive Neuroscience field. Despite this, all three Honours courses provide considerable breadth and depth in the science of Psychology with the accredited status being an excellent stepping-stone to professional development in that regard.
