Psychology at Leicester

The principles guiding the syllabus are to provide a wide initial coverage and steadily increasing depth of study in the various topics, taking into account the importance and topicality of any specific material. In the Final Year you will be able to specialise in topics of particular interest.

An integral part of the course is the teaching of research methodology and students acquire competence in the use of statistical methods to analyse data from experiments in the laboratory and in the field. In your Final Year you will be given the opportunity to use these skills to conduct an original research project under the supervision of a member of the teaching staff who specialises in the area of psychology your research is focussed on.

All of the academic staff in the School of Psychology are enthusiastic psychologists engaged in active research programmes in their various fields of expertise. This has a direct impact on the teaching programme, not only because you are being taught by experts in their field, but also because it affects whom you may be working with on your Final Year project.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

Psychology at Leicester is taught through a mixture of traditional lectures, seminars, tutorials and discussion groups along with a strong practical component with both directed and undirected projects carried out in the laboratory and the outside world.

Skills Gained

You will develop skills in oral and written communication, information retrieval and the evaluation of research. You will also develop generic skills in IT as well as specialist data analysis skills. Practical laboratory and project work will build your skills in team-working, laboratory techniques, and the use of statistical and research methodology. Collectively this will enable you to design and undertake experiments and other empirical investigations.

Graduate/Career Opportunities

Graduates will have acquired skills relevant to careers in industry (e.g. pharmaceutical), academic research, teaching, health-care, personnel and management training. Any of the three Honours degrees we offer will qualify you to seek further training in areas such as clinical, educational, forensic, occupational and counselling psychology. Postgraduate opportunities are available at Leicester in Psychology – where in addition to the forensic, occupational and clinical psychology courses run within the School there are active postgraduate research programmes in both PhD and Research Methods.

The Differences Among the Courses

The main difference between the courses is that in single-subject Psychology you will spend 100% of your time studying Psychology whereas for the Psychology with Sociology you will spend two-thirds of your time studying Psychology and one-third of your time studying your second subject. The Psychology with Cognitive Neuroscience degree has the same First Year as the single honours course, but then will increase in specialisation in the Neuroscience field. Despite this, all three Honours courses provide considerable breadth and depth in the science of Psychology and also give Graduate Basis for Registration with the BPS.

A second important difference is that for both single-subject Psychology and Psychology with Cognitive Neuroscience you will pursue a two-semester empirical dissertation in the Third Year, whereas for the Psychology with Sociology course, you will conduct a one-semester project.
