Part-time Degree Study and Foundation Degrees

At Leicester we have a commitment to providing flexible study and lifelong learning options, and believe that a diverse student body enriches the university experience for everyone.

Lifelong Learning

Through our dedicated Institute of Lifelong Learning we offer a variety of courses to suit your needs, whether you would like to study part-time or take a different route into higher education.

We understand that your needs may be different from those of full-time undergraduate students and have developed the course support and provision, together with further education colleges and private and public sector organisations, to ensure that these needs are met.

Part-time study

Studying part-time enables you to benefit from the same facilities and staff expertise as full-time students. You can use your study as a route into a new career or to develop your existing one by building on your skills and gaining relevant qualifications.

How and what you can study at Leicester

  • Part-time Certificates and Diplomas - these courses provide first and second year degree level study over two years
  • Part-time Foundation Degrees - BA Humanities and BA Counselling.

Other BA and BSc courses can be studied part-time at Leicester. Please see individual course entries for details on whether part-time provision is available.

Please note - you should apply for these courses direct rather than through UCAS.

Certificate and Diploma Programmes

The University runs a number of certificate and diploma programmes, offering part-time study over two years. Certificates of Higher Education are suitable for people who have no prior academic qualifications and are equivalent to first year degree level study, providing 120 level 1 credits. Studying for a certificate can offer an alternative route to gain entry to some of our degree courses.

Please contact the individual course admissions tutor to discuss these possibilities.

Our programme of certificate courses has traditionally included a wide range of subjects covering arts, humanities, management, counselling, ecology and social sciences.

What is a Foundation Degree?

Foundation Degrees are higher education qualifications designed for those who wish to attain new skills to further or change their career while still in work. They can also act as an alternative route into mainstream higher education, and can offer the possibility of fast tracking onto a full honours degree course. This new qualification has been developed by the higher education sector directly with employers to ensure that the skills they need are met.

Depending on the mode of study, they usually take two to four years to complete.

Who does them?

Our Foundation Degrees have been designed with employers to meet skills shortages at the higher technician and associate professional levels. Students receive specialist technical knowledge and skills needed in their sector. This means that many students who enrol on the courses will be in full-time employment. However, this is not always necessary and people currently not in employment, but wishing to start a career in a particular sector, may also benefit from studying one of our Foundation Degrees. Certain GCSEs, or equivalent, are normally desirable and relevant prior experience is always taken into account. Each Foundation Degree has its own entry requirements - please contact the course admissions tutor or secretary for details.

How do you study?

Because our Foundation Degrees are designed with working people in mind, they are available on a flexible basis via distance learning. Distance learning study enables you to continue to work whilst you study, allowing you to implement your new knowledge and skills into your workplace immediately.

Funding

Foundation Degrees are like any other higher education qualification and tuition fees are payable, although financial support is available in many cases. Some financial support may, therefore, be available from your employer. Please contact the relevant admissions tutor or course secretary to find out the fees for the course.
