BA Humanities and Arts (part-time)

The BA Humanities and Arts course is a newly revised version of a well-established and highly regarded programme.

The course aims to offer the University of Leicester’s learning experience to a broad audience and our tutors have wide experience in teaching a range of students, particularly mature and part-time learners. Extensive support and guidance is offered throughout.

The course is especially useful for people wanting to develop job-related skills, whilst undertaking an enjoyable and intellectually-stretching course.

Teaching and Assessment

You will have three hours per week class study across three terms. There are two or three Saturday Schools and a residential school before Easter in each year. Assessment is carried out mostly through coursework, though there are some short written examinations on a small number of the modules. It is estimated that you need to spend between 9 and 12 hours per week on private study. A personal tutor provides you with both academic and pastoral support throughout your studies. The University’s award winning support services are available to all part-time students and include student counselling, information on personal and career development, advice on health and well-being, and practical matters such as student welfare and financial advice.

Skills Gained

The course will help you to gain practical skills in:

  • Reading, viewing and thinking critically and analytically
  • How to research
  • Writing in various forms (reports, reviews, essays)
  • Researching and writing
  • Working with others
  • Time management
  • Delivering presentations
  • IT and information management

Graduate Opportunities

Because of the degree’s reputation, breadth and quality, graduates are able to progress in their career or to change to a new career. A Humanities and Arts degree can be relevant to a range of career options, for example in arts and business administration, advertising and marketing, local government administration, teaching or the media. A number of students do the course first before opting to train as teachers.  Many students go on to postgraduate study within the University of Leicester or elsewhere.
