Foundation Degree in Drug and Alcohol Counselling (part-time)

The Foundation Degree in Drug and Alcohol Counselling provides a professional training in drug and alcohol work for a broad range of people. The course will provide the skills, knowledge base and expertise needed to use a combination of counselling and therapeutic interventions in a range of contexts within the drug and alcohol field.

This course is also available by distance learning.

Teaching and Assessment

Assessment will be by coursework throughout. The assessments will include reflective essays, academic essays, case study assignments, recorded counselling sessions and observed skills practice. Tutors have wide experience in teaching a range of students, particularly adult and part-time learners. Extensive support and guidance is offered throughout your degree programme. 

A personal tutor will provide you with both academic and pastoral support throughout your studies. The University’s award winning services are available to all part-time students and include student counselling, information on personal and career development, advice on health and well-being and practical matters such as student welfare and financial advice.

Skills Gained

The aims of the programme are:

  • To provide you with a broad overview of the theory and practice of substance use counselling and interventions.
  • To prepare you to use counselling skills in the workplace and to undertake a placement working with clients in a contained and professional environment.
  • To provide you with an in-depth understanding of the theory and practice of working with substance users in the drug and alcohol field.
  • To introduce you to ethical frameworks that underpin and contain good practice in drug and alcohol counselling and interventions.
  • To enable you to develop academic skills that can be applied to discussing the complexities of counselling and intervention theory and practice with substance users.
  • To develop the skills to critically evaluate research and academic texts in order to inform their practice and support their professional development.

Graduate Opportunities

The Foundation Degree provides a foundation course for people to train as drug and alcohol workers and build a career in this profession. The course provides an opportunity for personal and professional career development and will enable people to develop sufficient competence and confidence to access employment in the drug and alcohol field.
