About the Course
Much of economics requires good mathematical skills. This degree provides an education for students who are primarily interested in mathematics, but would like to apply their mathematical skills in economics. Our aim is to produce graduates who are capable of working in the business sector where a good appreciation of mathematics adds real value. However, the degree will also provide a broad training in mathematics, which will be useful for the full range of graduate opportunities.
First Year
During your first year you will study:
- Methods of Applied Mathematics
- Foundations of Mathematics
- Probability
- Introduction to Real Analysis and Linear Algebra
- Introduction to Computing
- Micro and Macroeconomics
Second Year
During your second year, your training in the fundamentals of mathematics and economics continues, but with a broadening scope to also include: Dynamics and Differential Equations; Statistics and a choice of Economics modules ranging from Household, Firms and Markets to Money and Banking; Principles of Finance and further Macroeconomic theory.
Third Year
The course continues with a choice from a large selection of mathematics and economics modules, including:
- Actuarial Mathematics
- Operational Research
- Statistics
- Econometrics
- Economics and Business Forecasting
- International Finance
- Financial Derivatives
- Managerial Economics
- Public Economics
A significant individual project applying mathematics to the solution of real problems from the economic and business worlds is also included.
