About the Course
There are many practical and intellectual synergies between management and economics. Any organisation has a market and the study of economics helps to understand how markets are structured and shaped. Managers have to be able to understand the global economic climate and the impact of micro- and macro-economic factors on the marketplace. The BA Management Studies and Economics is a challenging programme which enables students to combine their studies of management with a particular focus on economic issues.
First Year
The First Year lays down the foundations and prepares you for the analytical and theoretical arguments that are developed throughout the degree. In addition to an overview provided through introductory modules covering the Foundations of Management, Microeconomics and Macroeconomics, you will engage with issues of other specialist areas such as Using Economics Data and Applying Maths to Economics. Throughout this First Year you will have the opportunity to develop your writing skills and qualitative and quantitative data analysis skills.
Second Year
In the Second Year, you will develop your knowledge of further specialist areas and continue to engage with the debates introduced in the First Year. The integrative approach of considering the ethical, cultural, historical and inter-disciplinary aspects of management will be facilitated through core modules such as Organisational Behaviour. You will examine important economic themes such as Market Power and Market Failure. You will also have the opportunity to select a number of options, which typically include modules such as:
- Organisational Change;
- International Finance;
- Corporate Social Responsibility;
- and Stock Market Analysis and Equity Valuation.
Third Year
In your Final Year, you will continue to develop and integrate your knowledge of management and economics through modules such as: Strategy; Critical Analysis for Management; Accounting; and Advanced Micro- and Macroeconomics. Further integrative modules will be provided for you to choose from. Typical modules might include, for example, Business Ethics, International Business and Corporate Finance.
