About the Course
You take a set core of modules each year. These are all based around wide interdisciplinary subjects and allow you to tailor your interests within this framework.
Alongside this in each year there are modules in Computing, Mathematics for Science and Laboratory Science.
First Year
You study core modules in:
- Origins of Science
- Biological Chemistry
- Ecology
- Planetary Science
- Neuroscience and Computation.
Elective modules include:
- Management for Science
- Sustainable Development
- Mathematical and Computational Modelling
- Science Communication
- Biological Science
- Chemistry
- Earth Science
- Physics.
Second Year
You study core modules in:
- Physical and Chemical Thermodynamics
- Astrobiology
- Pharmaceutical Chemistry
- Forensic Science
- Biophysics.
Elective modules include:
- Management for Science
- Sustainable Development
- Mathematical and Computational Modelling
- Science Communication
- Biological Science
- Chemistry
- Earth Science
- Physics.
Third Year
You study core modules in:
- Evolution
- Nanoscience
- Electromagnetism and Cell Signalling
- Earth Systems Science.
In addition to these you have a synoptic problem solving module, and a science “journal club” in which you will discuss current scientific papers. You will undertake a substantial research project which can be in a single discipline of choice or in a field of interdisciplinary science, science communication or history and philosophy of science.
Fourth Year
You study core modules in: Science of Complex Systems and Scientific Computing. In addition to these you undertake a reading project to bring you to the cutting edge of research in an interdisciplinary field and an extended research project in an interdisciplinary area. Examples of topics offered include:
- Complex Systems
- Environmental Science
- Bio-imaging
- Biophysics
- Neural Nets
- Climate Change
- Earth Observation Science
- Astrophysics
- Mathematical Modelling.
