International students can progress directly on to these courses from the International Foundation Year in Engineering, Physics and Maths.

About these Courses

Geophysics applies the principles of physics to explore the subsurface geology of our planet: from studying earthquakes and the Earth’s core, to locating oil and water, to archaeology. As a Leicester geophysics student you will acquire the knowledge and skills to solve real-world problems. Geophysicists are in high demand to address problems facing our society – from raw materials and energy supply to environmental hazards.

First and Second Years

The first two years are mostly common with the Geology degrees, designed to provide you with a thorough grounding in geoscience. You will develop geophysical knowledge and skills through taught modules and your tutorials. Your specialist module in Near-Surface Geophysics prepares you to formulate your independent field-based project on a geophysical topic of your choice.

Third Year

This year concentrates on geophysics. You will use the geological knowledge acquired in the first two years to interpret geophysical data. Modules in Reflection Seismology, Potential Fields and Environmental Site Investigation Methods prepare you for employment by demonstrating how geophysicists solve real problems. You will undertake geophysical fieldwork, analyse the data, complete a project and develop report writing and presentation skills. MGeol students produce a dissertation, preparing you for advanced research-based learning in the fourth year.

Fourth Year (MGeol only)

Independent research forms the basis of this Master's year and you will be treated as a research student. Recent projects range from continental rifting processes in Africa to the monitoring of landfill sites. Your choice of topic allows you to specialise in aspects of geophysics that particularly interest you and can be linked to vacation work experience. Higher-level taught modules on global geophysics and advanced data analysis extend your geophysical knowledge. Optional modules demonstrate how geophysics is used in the study of contaminated land, engineering geology and hydrogeology.
