About the Course
This joint degree allows students to study both English and History. Modules in these complementary subjects are clustered together in ways that support and enrich each other. Both English and History modules offer you the opportunity to study the full range of British history and literature from the Middle Ages to the present day.
First Year
You will take half of your modules in the School of English and half in the School of Historical Studies. In English you will take three core modules, including work on strategies for reading, the investigation of major literary forms such as drama, and the history of the English language. In Historical Studies, you take modules on Modern History, Early Modern History, and Medieval History.
Second Year
You will continue to take half of your modules in English and half in History. In English, you will study “From Satire to Sensibility”, exploring the literature of the period 1660-1789, and Medieval Literature, including Chaucer. In History you choose from a wide range of history options, studying concepts such as religion, race, gender, culture, society and spaces. You also decide whether to do a History or an English dissertation: students wishing to do a third-year dissertation in History are obliged to take the Historical Research Methods module in place of an optional module.
Third Year
You must do a minimum of 40 credits in each subject, a core English module, and a dissertation in either English or History. After that, there is a choice of modules and special subjects available. You can choose to specialise in particular periods or genres, and follow your research interests in either subject.
Year Abroad
You may transfer to the four year European Union degree to study abroad for one year at one of the partner institutions of the School of Historical Studies.
