A/AS-levels

  • For BA English: AAB-ABB at A2-level including an A in English Language or English Literature or English Language and Literature.
  • For BA English and History: ABB at A2-level, including English and History.
  • For BA English and American Studies: ABB at A2-level, including English.

You will normally be required to secure three A2-levels, though two AS-levels may occasionally be considered in the place of one A2-level. General Studies is accepted as one of three A2-levels. For other joint degrees with English, please see entries under Modern Languages, History of Art, and Film Studies. All joint degrees with English require at least grade B in A2-level English.

International Baccalaureate

  • For BA English: Pass Diploma with 34-32 points, including 6 in Higher Level English.
  • For BA English and History and BA English and American Studies: Pass Diploma with 32 points, including 6 in Higher Level English.

European Baccalaureate

  • For BA English: 80% overall including 8 in English.
  • For BA English and History and BA English and American Studies: 77% overall including 8 in English.

Access to HE Diploma

Pass relevant diploma with some credits at distinction, and a review of recent written work.

Cambridge Pre-U

  • For BA English: D3/D3/M2 to D3/M2/M2 in Principal Subjects.
  • For BA English and History and BA English and American Studies: D3/M2/M2 in Principal Subjects

BTEC Nationals

Pass Diploma with DDM. Please contact department regarding eligibility.

Other qualifications

Other national and international qualifications welcomed.

Mature students welcomed

Alternative qualifications considered.

Second Year Entry

Possible for those with advanced qualifications compatible with our degree structure.

Applicants are not normally interviewed: All those receiving the offer of admission will be invited to visit the School.

Undergraduate degrees in the School of English are not offered on a part-time basis.
