EngCouncilAccred.jpgAbout the Course

Electrical and Electronic Engineering continues to be one of the fastest growing branches of engineering incorporating a whole spectrum of activities and specialisations, including power generation and transmission, electrical machines and actuators, communications, electronics, digital electronics and microprocessors, embedded computer systems, and control systems. A wide range of career opportunities is open to graduates.

First Year

This This year provides a broad engineering foundation.

You will be introduced to electrical, electronic mechanical and systems engineering. There are courses in mathematics and mathematical modelling. You will be given an introduction to the principles of engineering design, including computer-aided design and the management of engineering projects. Through the personal tutorial system and through courses you will be introduced to skills for personal and professional development. Laboratories, workshop and other practical activities complement lecture courses.

Second Year

Modules start to move from general foundation towards specialised ones. You will gradually develop specific expertise and skills in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

You will continue to study some modules with other specialist engineering degrees. These include mathematics and mathematical modelling, management, engineering design and engineering control systems. You will carry out a multidisciplinary team project, highlighting the need for engineers from different fields to work closely with each other towards a common goal.

You will also study specialist areas including:

  • electrical engineering
  • Digital electronics and microprocessors
  • Communications
  • Electrical materials
  • Other electrical and electronics engineering subjects

Third Year

In the third year, you will spend approximately 25% of your time on an individual project in an area that you choose as being particularly interesting. Typical project titles are

  • Hydro-turbine generator design
  • Analysis of sleep state from EEG
  • Electronic signature recognition
  • High voltage insulating systems
  • Micro controller for electrical drives
  • A microwave Doppler system

MEng students will select a group project topic, investigate it in depth and prepare a plan for their fourth year work as the project continues into the fourth year. These projects may be in collaboration with an industrial sponsor.

In common with other engineering students, there will be modules on management and engineering control systems. There is a range of options and core subjects in the areas of

  • Electrical and electronic engineering
  • Power electronics and power systems
  • Embedded computer systems
  • Communications

Fourth Year

The MEng project comprises one third of the fourth year assessment. You will carry out the work planned during the previous year and will be involved in group design projects on electrical and electronic design.

All fourth year students study aspects of management and leadership, such as the management of engineering design, considering risks and reliability, and personal and professional development.

There is a range of options including:

  • Areas of advanced communications
  • Bioengineering
  • Data analysis
  • Engineering control
