BA International Relations and History - 3rd year

About Me

Hi, my name is Anastasia. I am 21 years old and I am in my 3rd year, studying International Relations and History. I have really enjoyed my time at university and I am still stunned by the thought of graduating soon! After university, I am excited to say that I will be staying on in Leicester for another year to do an internship at a local church. Amongst many things it will involve engaging with the most deprived sections of the community (i.e. homeless and refugees), trying to make a difference in people’s lives. This is something I intend to continue in the future, most probably in the field of International Development. In the meantime I am getting on with revision in preparation for final exams.

Hobbies and Interests

As a student of International Relations and History, it’s probably no surprise that I love reading, particularly historical fiction. I am also into current affairs, keeping up-to-date with the happenings across the globe. At university I have been involved in quite a few societies but have probably been most active in the Christian Union getting involved with a range of activities. I also worked as a Student Ambassador in my final year which has been a great way to build skills and a fun way to show off the University. I have taken part in some volunteering, working in the office of a local charity that aims to fight poverty and look after the environment; two issues that I am pretty passionate about.

Advice for prospective students

In advising undergraduates, I would start by saying make the most of your time at university! It is such a great place to expand your horizons, coming into contact with people from all walks of life. You will totally be shocked at how quickly it’s over so make the most of every day. Societies are a great setting for making friends, pursuing your passions and maybe even discovering new ones so be sure to join some. On the more academic side, right from the beginning, get to know how your department works. Be brave and nominate yourself to be a Course Rep, it’s a great contribution to the Students’ Union. Also, (and this is very important) get to know your Personal Tutor- they are very helpful! The Student Development Zone is an amazing service which I sadly didn’t make use of early enough. It’s a great place for academic as well as career advice- first year is really not too early to get thinking. So in all I would say, to have a satisfying university experience, its important to enjoy it, work hard and keep an open mind.
