BA American Studies - 3rd year

About me

Hello! My name is Gemma. I am 22 and from Essex. I am currently in the fourth and final year of my American Studies degree after I studied abroad at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, USA in my third year. I’m currently in the throes of writing my dissertation whilst frantically looking for a job to go into once I graduate. In the future, I would like to do a Masters, then work in government and maybe be Prime Minister one day... keep your eye on this face.

Hobbies and interests

I am currently in my second year as an elected officer on the University’s Student Council and in my third year as a Course Representative on my department’s Student-Staff Committee. Alongside this, I also serve as the President of the Hope Not Hate Society, as well as Secretary of the BUNAC Society promoting work and volunteer abroad programmes to students on campus. I am also a Student Ambassador for the University and work the Open Days on campus as well as outreach programmes in the local area.

Advice for prospective students

The university experience really is what you make it. There are so many opportunities here to get involved and gain some understanding and experience in whatever it is you love. For instance, if your dream is to be a journalist, you can write for the student newspaper and the local newspaper, enter an article for the many competitions run through your department, and utilise the careers service to find more information about how to get where you want to be. Should this Prime Minister gig not work out, I would like to go into something in human resources or marketing. By throwing myself into university and being involved in the things that I am, I have been able to develop a range of skills which would make me a good candidate for these areas and I hope that this will set me up well for working on projects like the Olympics 2012. Add onto this that I’ve also met some blinding people along the way and it’s a bit of a win-win for me really.
