Advice for Research Degree Applicants
How to Apply
If you are applying for a funded studentship or other University funded place, please follow the advice in the relevant advert.
Self-funded applicants and those with external sponsorship should:
- Use the programme description to make sure we offer research degree supervision in the area you want to work in
- Follow the programme description advice and draft a research proposal or personal statement as needed
- Prepare your supporting documents
- Submit your online application or apply by post
Most of our research degrees start in October - but we welcome applications at any time and other start dates are possible in some cases.
Academic Entry Requirements
Applicants to PhD, MPhil, and other research degree programmes should hold or expect to obtain before starting:
a Bachelors degree with first or upper-second class honours from a UK university
an equivalent qualification from an overseas institution
Please note that:
in some cases it is expected that you will also hold a Masters degree in a discipline relevant to the area you want to research - if a Masters degree is required this will be stated in the programme description
other academic and professional qualifications and experience may be taken into account and in some cases form an integral part of the entry requirements - where other academic/professional qualifications or experience are required this will be stated in the programme description
applicants must provide with their application proof of all academic qualifications held and include with their application copies of all relevant diplomas, certificates, and transcripts
international applicants must provide official copies of their entire course transcripts including explanations of the mark schemes used and, where possible, an indication of their class ranking/position in class - and if your supporting documents are not in English, we require officially translated versions as well as copies in the original language
If you need any further advice, please contact our Postgraduate Admissions Team.
English Language Entry Requirements
Applicants from outside the UK must provide evidence that they meet the University's English language entry requirements for postgraduate programmes.

Start Dates and Closing Date for Applications
Most research students start their degree in October or January - entry at other points may be possible, please contact the relevant School/Department for further advice.
Applications for research degree programmes can be submitted at any time and are considered throughout the year - there are no specific closing dates for submitting an application. If you are applying for a specific studentship or other funding opportunity, please be aware of any application deadlines associated with this.
You are advised to submit your application as far in advance of your proposed start date as possible - particularly if you will require a visa to study in the UK.
Please note that it can take at least 28 days to consider your application and may take longer if we need to dicuss your research area with you.
