The Department of Physics and Astronomy is pleased to offer at least eight Research Council studentships for October 2012 entry to its Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme. The studentships will pay full-time University UK/EU tuition fees for three years and include an annual maintenance grant worth at least £13,590 a year.
These studentships are funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC).

Entry Requirements
Applicants must have a first-class or high upper second-class honours degree (or equivalent qualification) in a relevant discipline and meet the University's standard English language entry requirements.
These studentships are only available to applicants who are eligible to pay the UK/EU tuition fee - i.e., those who are permanently resident in the UK or another EU country. Please note that applicants from the EU (excluding the UK) must have been resident in the UK for at least three years prior to commencing the studentship.
Applicants from outside the EU are not eligible for these studentships unless they have been granted permanent UK residency/citizenship.
The studentships are for full-time study only and applicants must be able to commence their studies in October 2012.

Your personal statement should be no more than 1,000 words.
