The Stanley Burton Centre for Holocaust and Genocide Studies - the oldest Holocaust research centre in the UK -  is pleased to offer a bursary for October 2012 entry to the Masters of Research (MRes) in History programme. The bursary will pay half of the full-time University UK/EU tuition fees for one year (pro-rata over two years for part-time study).

MRes in History

The MRes in History degree is an exciting new course that started in October 2011, and which provides students with the training and individual support necessary to complete an extended piece of historical research.

The programme provides students with the knowledge, understanding, and experience of research methods and practices in history. Students will also develop transferable skills in communication, self-management and planning. The programme includes training in historical research methods and skills, both in general and as required for the chosen research project and the support necessary to plan and carry out an extended piece of research to a standard that might form the basis of a publication. It also aims to equip students with the research skills needed for historical research at doctoral level.

Please note that this half-fee bursary is available to students wishing to apply to study for the MRes in History and who specifically wish to complete the extended piece of research in Holocaust/Genocide Studies.

Research Areas and Supervision

The successful applicant's research project will be supervised by a member of staff in the Stanley Burton Centre for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, part of the University's School of Historical Studies.

We welcome applications from those looking to work in areas that relate to ongoing research at the Centre. The research interests of the Centre and its staff include the history of the Holocaust in Europe, other cases of mass violence in 20th Century Europe (especially central and eastern Europe) and its colonies, as well as memory in post-violence societies including Holocaust representation.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have an upper second-class honours degree (or equivalent qualification) in history or a relevant discipline - or be able to show evidence that they will achieve this before October 2012 - and meet the University's standard English language entry requirements.

In certain cases - such as mature students who may have a significant amount of published work to their name - evidence of substantial alternative research training may mean that a lower degree classification/a degree in another discipline can be accepted.

It is desirable that applicants be proficient in at least one language other than English or are willing to undertake language courses alongside the MRes programme.

The bursary is only available to applicants who are eligible to pay the UK/EU tuition fee - i.e., those who are permanently resident in the UK or another EU country. The bursary is for full- or part-time study (paid pro-rata for part-time students) and applicants must be able to commence their studies in October 2012.
