English Literature, American Literature, English Language, or Creative Writing
The School of English is pleased to offer two bursaries for October 2012 entry to its Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme. The bursaries are worth £1,500 each and will be paid as a reduction in the course fee in the first year of registration. The bursaries are open to new international (i.e., outside the EU) applicants.
Research Areas and Supervision
We welcome applications from those looking to work in areas compatible with the research interests of our staff within the broad themes of:
- English Literature
- American Literature
- English Language
- Creative Writing

Please note that research proposals on an interdisciplinary topic related to our staff research interests are encouraged.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must have a first-class or high upper second-class honours degree (or equivalent qualification) in English and meet the University's standard English language entry requirements. It is expected that applicants should also have a Masters degree with merit or distinction in English or a related discipline or be able to show evidence that they will achieve this before October 2012.
The bursaries are open to suitable international (i.e., outside the EU) applicants only. The bursaries are for full-time study only and applicants must be able to commence their studies in October 2012.

To apply, simply follow our four-point checklist:
- Have a good idea of what you want to research and identify one or two members of staff whose research interests are compatible with the area you want to work in
- Draft a research proposal that tells us what you want to research, how you intend to do it, and why it is worth doing

The bursaries will be awarded on the overall strength of the application - including academic attainment, references, and quality of the research proposal. The closing date for applications is 01 August 2012.
