Research Degrees - PhD, MPhil, and Professional Doctorates

We offer two main types of research degree - the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Philosophy (MPhil). Both involve producing a thesis of publishable quality which is then defended in an oral (viva voce) examination.

Many of our PhD and MPhil degrees can be taken part-time or by distance learning and we offer professional doctorates in Education, Psychology, Medicine, and Social Science.

Studentships and Funding

Find our latest funded PhD studentships and other postgraduate funding opportunities. Those joining us through these studentships can benefit from a range of support packages including fee waivers, stipends, and travel/conference allowances.

Funded Social Science PhD Studentships Available Now

This Spring the College of Social Science at the University of Leicester is pleased to offer a number of PhD studentships for October 2012 entry. We also have several Graduate Teaching/Research Assistantships - allowing you to fund your PhD studies through part-time work in the University. 

Supervisors and Supervision

All of our postgraduate researchers have a personal supervisor who is there to help them plan and manage their work and develop their research skills. Find a supervisor using the staff research interests listings in our research degree programme descriptions.

Open Days and Visits

We do not currently organise University-wide open days for prospective postgraduate researchers. Please contact the relevant School/Department to enquire about departmental open days and visits.
