Cancer Cell and Molecular Biology - MSc
Duration and mode of study
One year full-time.
Start Dates
September each year.
Entry requirements
A degree with a first- or second-class honours in Biological Sciences or a related subject awarded by a UK university. Applications from candidates with equivalent qualifications from non-UK universities are also welcome. Non-graduates with appropriate industrial or professional experience are encouraged to apply.

Course aims
This course is designed to provide an in-depth study of current developments in the molecular biology of cancer cells to Master’s level. The course aims to develop your analytical skills and give you direct experience of relevant techniques currently used in cancer research. At the end of the course students should be adequately trained for employment as scientists in industry, academia or a research institute either by direct entry or following further study.
Course modules
The course comprises six modules:
- Module 1: Introduction to molecular techniques
- Module 2: Research methods in cell biology
- Module 3: Research methods in cancer biology
- Module 4: Advanced topics in cancer biology
- Module 5: Data analysis
- Module 6: Independent laboratory research project
The first five modules are taught in the first three months of the course. The sixth module, comprising a nine-month cancer research project, is carried out in a research laboratory at the University of Leicester, at a UK Cancer Research Institute or in an industrial laboratory.
Teaching and assessment methods
Teaching on the course comprises lectures, tutorials, practicals, demonstrations and self-directed learning. Students are assessed on their written practical reports in the formal laboratory course and in three course examinations. The independent research project constitutes the major element of the course and is assessed on the students’ practical performance, a written dissertation and a seminar.
