Entry requirements
A degree in Archaeology, Ancient History, Classical Studies or cognate subjects with appropriate content or equivalent professional qualifications or experience. Those with a first degree in other subjects may take some of our undergraduate distance learning modules as bridging courses to postgraduate study.

Course aims
To assist in professional development; improve knowledge in a particular area; develop skills; enhance your employability and career; and provide a pathway to further postgraduate study.
Pathways to MAs
It is possible to use this route to accumulate credits towards our MAs in Archaeology and Heritage, Historical Archaeology or The Classical Mediterranean.
Course Options
The title of your eventual qualification will depend on which module(s) you choose. You can study any two modules (30 credits each) or one module (30 credits) and a dissertation (30 credits). The University's Admissions Office will contact you to confirm your choices. Please note that, at this stage your application will just say 'Archeology Postgraduate Certificate'
Group A: Archaeology and Heritage modules
Take any two of the following for a Postgraduate Certificate in Archaeology and Heritage.
- Landscape Archaeology
- Managing Archaeological Practices
- Archaeology of Standing Buildings (also in Group B)
- Critical Approaches to the Archaeological Heritage
Group B: Historical Archaeology modules
Take any two of the following for a Postgraduate Certificate in Historical Archaeology.
- Doing Historical Archaeology (also in Group C)
- Archaeology of the Modern World
- The Historical Archaeology of England (field-based)
- Archaeology of Standing Buildings (also in Group A)
Group C: Classical Mediterranean Studies modules
Take any two of the following for a Postgraduate Certificate in Classical Mediterranean Studies.
- Doing Historical Archaeology (also in Group B)
- Encountering the Classical World (field-based)
- Households and Domesticity in the Ancient World
- Classical Landscapes
Or tailor your own course
Take any two modules from the lists above, from different groups, for a Postgraduate Certificate in Archaeology - use the link on the right.
Or specialise in one topic
Take one module from the lists above, plus a short (7,500 word) dissertation, to gain a Postgraduate Certificate in [name of module].
Teaching and assessment methods
The course is taught by distance learning and in the case of field-based modules, a week-long residential component. Each module contains at least two assignments which test a range of skills.
