Research that inspires your teaching

In 1984, Alec Jeffreys discovered the technique of genetic fingerprinting in a laboratory in the Department of Genetics. Twenty five years later, in 2009, Professor Sir Alec Jeffreys still conducts his research in the same Department - and teaches there too.

Simon James in the School of Archaeology and Ancient History has examined the rich archaeological remains of one of Rome's eastermost garrisons in the city of Dura on the Euphrates, uncovering evidence of chemical warfare from the 3rd century AD.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy supplied components for NASA’s Swift satellite which has greatly expanded our knowledge of gamma ray bursts. The University of Leicester also hosts the UK Swift Science Data Centre.
