University of Leicester academic, Dr Fransiska Louwagie, co-edits book on major novel by Piotr Rawicz

A new book co-edited by Dr Fransiska Louwagie, from the School of Modern Languages at the University of Leicester, is soon to be launched at both the Holocaust Memorial in Paris and the Wiener Library in London.

The book, entitled Un ciel de sang et de cendres: Piotr Rawicz et la solitude du témoin ('A sky of blood and ashes: Piotr Rawicz and the loneliness of the witness') focuses on Ukrainian-French Holocaust survivor Piotr Rawicz and his exceptional novel Le Sang du ciel (translated as Blood from the Sky).

Dr Fransiska Louwagie, current Deputy Director of the Stanley Burton Centre for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at the University of Leicester, said:

"Whilst Rawicz’s book achieved immediate literary success, it gradually fell into obscurity, receiving little critical attention for a long time. Addressing this lack, this publication includes a range of contributions analysing Rawicz’s exceptional novel from the perspective of different academic disciplines."

Dr Louwagie’s book, which is co-edited with Dr Anny Dayan Rosenman (Université Paris VII) and published by Kimé, will be launched at the Mémorial de la Shoah in Paris on 2 June 2013, at an event attended by prominent French scholars and writers including Hélène Cixous and Bertrand Leclair. The UK presentation partnered by the Wiener Library will take place in London on 25 September 2013

Oxford University Press to publish new book by leading organisational theorist at Leicester.

A book launch to mark a new publication by an organizational expert and former Head of the School of Management will be held in the University Bookshop on Wednesday 26th June at 6pm.

Professor Gibson Burrell is about to release a ground breaking new approach to the study of organizations, in his book ‘Styles of Organizing – The Will to Form’.

The book aims to illuminate organization theory by discussing its interrelationship with key features of economics, architecture, design of the built environment and associated artwork. Professor Gibson Burrell suggests that these key areas of social science and the humanities are struggling with the same issue – ‘the will to form’.

Gibson Burrell, Professor of Organization Theory here at the University of Leicester and past Head of the School of Management, is a leading organisation theorist with particular interests in architecture, space and organisation.

The University of Leicester was featured on last night’s episode of BBC’s ‘The One Show’ (20th May 2013) displaying the cutting-edge expertise creating a world-first, non-invasive disease detection facility. This facility was a cross-disciplinary effort from Cardiovascular Sciences, Physics and Astronomy and Chemistry.

The Diagnostics Development Unit is designed to use different senses including ‘touch, smell and feel’ to detect disease without any invasive procedures, for example probes, blood tests, or other traumatic testing.

The ‘bay’ uses different scans to help diagnose the patient by using a selection of instruments while the patient is lying down. The sick bay represents similarities to the bays featured in the well-loved science fiction TV series Star Trek.

Exhibition sheds light on Leicestershire’s past

The University of Leicester features in a new exhibition in the county.

'Treasure!' - An exhibition at Leicestershire County Council's Snibston Discovery Museum - features a dazzling array of finds from 4,500 years ago to the 17th century and is the first time they have been displayed in one place.

Richard Buckley, from University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS), formally opened the exhibition which includes a large panel about the University and its archaeological work. ULAS excavated the Hallaton Treasure and the Vine St Hoard which are on display.

Notable exhibits also include the Bosworth Boar badge (pictured right) - King Richard III’s silver-gilt insignia discovered on the site of the Battle of Bosworth and probably handed out by the king to his followers – along with the Hallaton Treasure - a stunning collection of Iron Age and Roman finds, including a Roman cavalry helmet, excavated jointly by community and professional archaeologists.

Bronze Age hoards from Welby and Rothley, a mysterious and beautiful Anglo-Saxon decorative object from Dalby (pictured left) will be displayed for the first time and many small items of gold and silver jewellery will be available to see.

There will also be interactive games, including a metal detector test, the chance to try on replica Roman helmets and a look at how metal detectorists and community archaeology groups have contributed to the county’s archaeology.

Treasure! – Shedding Light on Leicestershire’s Past runs until 3 November.

To find out more, please visit www.snibston.com or call 01530 278444.

Background

Certain types of metal objects have been subject to Treasure laws since medieval times. Since that period the Coroner has been responsible for identifying treasure based on its material and the circumstances of the find.

The glittering array of objects in the exhibition are usually displayed around the county at Charnwood Museum, Melton Carnegie Museum, Harborough Museum and Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre, or viewable by appointment at the council’s Collections Resources Centre.

The main Hallaton Treasure displays will return to the refurbished Harborough Museum early next year.
