Public access defibrillators installed across campus

The University's first community public access defibrillators have been installed.

The University has installed three Public Access Defibrillators across campus, one outside the Charles Wilson Building, one outside the Maurice Shock Medical Science Building and one at 15 University Road (see map below).

These defibrillators have been registered with the East Midlands Ambulance Service who will oversee their use. If the operator believes a defibrillator is required following a 999 call, they will give directions to the nearest unit, issue the access code and instructions for use.

The provision of these community-use defibrillators ties in with our PROUD corporate social responsibility (CSR) agenda where 'Promoting health and wellbeing' is one theme of our CSR strategy. You can read more about PROUD here.

This map shows the locations of the three campus-based defibrillators.

An additional defibrillator unit has also been provided at the Stoughton Road Sports Pavilion and University Security now have two defibrillators to carry in their patrol vehicles. This complements the units already held at the University's two sports centres.

All of the defibrillators are fully automatic and talk you through what to do if they are required (the 999 operator will also provide instructions). The equipment is provided should someone have a sudden cardiac arrest in/around the University campus.

The community-use defibrillators are housed in a vandal-proof, heated, stainless steel cabinet, guarded by a key pad. Upon receiving a call the ambulance service will direct the caller to the machine and will issue the access code. A green light on the outside of the cabinet will show when the equipment is ready to use.

The defibrillator also has a voice over instruction mode to aid the user, as well as a video presentation to help those who are hard of hearing.
