This year’s No Smoking Day aims to encourage pride in being a quitter and do the single best thing you can for your health.

This year’s No Smoking Day theme is ‘Proud to be a Quitter. In life we’re told never to give up – but when it comes to smoking, being a ‘Quitter’ is a good thing and BHF are using inspirational stories of ex-smokers to highlight the life-changing benefits of quitting.

The annual No Smoking Day campaign, which is now in its 33rd year, is run by the British Heart Foundation (BHF). It inspires and helps smokers who want to quit, and is supported by an alliance of UK health bodies and charities.

Dr Mike Knapton, Associate Medical Director at the BHF: “Giving up smoking is the single best thing you can do for your health, and that’s why the British Heart Foundation runs No Smoking Day. We’re encouraging smokers to mark Wednesday 9 March in their calendars, and take the first step towards a smoke-free life.”

Should you not wish to quit smoking – the University of Leicester asks you to be a considerate smoker:

  • Please respect the needs of non-smokers who do not wish to breathe tobacco smoke
  • If a member of staff asks you to stop smoking after you have lit up, please either put out the cigarette or move to a different location.
  • If you're smoking on campus please move away from building entrances, open doors and windows – this will help keep your smoke from drifting inside.
  • Please blow your smoke away from people and give nonsmokers a little extra personal space.
  • After you finish smoking your cigarette, be responsible with the butt. Put out the lit end, and after making sure there are no live embers left, dispose of it in an ashtray or trash receptacle. Please don’t drop the butt.
