Eight University students were shortlisted for the TARGETjobs Undergraduate of the Year Awards.

The TARGETjobs Undergraduate of the Year Awards celebrate the best undergraduates across the country, and is highly competitive with over 3,000 students competing for 12 prizes this year. We are delighted that eight University of Leicester students were shortlisted in the awards this year.

All finalists had to complete a rigorous series of online tests, application forms, interviews and assessment exercises that mirror a typical graduate recruitment process.

The Computer Science and Analytics category, sponsored by Expedia, saw three Leicester students shortlisted, out of 128 applicants. The category recognises outstanding undergraduates studying a computer, engineering, mathematics, statistics, science or data science/artificial intelligence-related degree. This included Ciaran Deasy, who also completed a summer internship at Barclays and is now currently on a placement year at IBM, whilst completing his degree in BSc Computer Science with a Year in Industry.

Ciaran said: “The TARGETjobs Undergraduate of the Year Awards were a fantastic experience, getting the chance to network with exceptionally talented students and being challenged through a rigorous application process proved to be incredibly rewarding. I was absolutely delighted to have made the shortlist…and my best advice would be to apply as it is a fantastic opportunity to improve your networking and employability skills.”

Marek Gaj, a Computing with Management (year abroad) degree student, was also shortlisted and attended the awards ceremony in London on April 22 2016. He said: “The whole process was amazing, from the assessment centre organised by Expedia to very talented students from different universities that I had a chance to meet and work with. It is a great opportunity to test yourself and receive feedback before applying for a real job. It is funny because before I applied for the award I thought that the "Undergraduate of the Year" title is out of my reach. However, the fact that I was shortlisted shows that you never know, if you do not try."

The eight shortlisted University of Leicester students were: Caitlin Sear, Ciaran Deasy, Luc Ly, Marek Gaj, Marija Litvinaite, Nikita Minhas, Shanyuga Ganesan and Wouter Noordhoek.

Bob Athwal, Director of Student Experience at the University said: “I am delighted that so many of our students’ achievements were recognised at these prestigious awards. We have a high calibre of students at Leicester, who are keen to succeed. Our departments, Student Support Services, and the Career Development Service all work together with students to help them reach their potential and have the extra dimension to succeed in the workplace.”

The Career Development Service aims to ensure our students are equipped for a lifetime of career success through providing them with invaluable experiences that will boost their skills and enhance their confidence in preparing for competitive application processes. This includes mock assessment centres and interviews, application coaching, opportunities to meet leading employers face-to-face at careers events but to name a few.
