Students from across the UK are being urged to enter their pictures for a new photography competition to coincide with Universities Week 2011. The Big Picture Competition offers £250 of photography vouchers for the best image that shows how universities are interacting with local communities.

From environmental projects and youth mentoring schemes through to community music events and charity fashion shows, the competition hopes to uncover a wealth of great work taking place around the country.

The photos will be assessed by a top panel of judges including Tim Kerr, Head of Photography at TNR, part of the Press Association and Nigel Semmens, Director of Communications at Universities UK.

Entrants should submit up to five of their favourite photos (up to two per email), along with a 150-word max outline of what each image represents before 1 June 2011 to neighbourhood@nus.org.uk. The photos should be in JPEG format and between two and five megabytes.

Entrants should include their full name, e-mail address and telephone number, as well as the name of the university/higher education institution they attend and their student ID number in their email.

Universities Week (13-19 June 2011) is a national campaign demonstrating the benefits of universities within UK society.
