Local sporting opportunities this (Olympic) weekend: 22-24 July

Next weekend marks the one year anniversary in the build up to London 2012 and the event is being celebrated with the Olympic Open Weekend. There are numerous events happening around Leicestershire with plenty of opportunities for people to try new sports and activities. The University has been linking with local clubs over the past year to offer greater sporting opportunities for its staff and students. Below are some examples of the types of activities that will be running between 22 and 24 July within the county.

Melton Mowbray Archery Club

Have a go at archery on Saturday 23 July 10.00am to 4.30pm at Wreake Valley Community College, Parkstone Road, Syston. Follow the target signs on the day and come and try an Olympic sport, £1 for 6 arrows. Members of the club will also be shooting and you will be able to watch the "experts" and how they do it. City of Leicester Lady Hoops Basketball Club

Are putting on Basketball for Women taster sessions at Aylestone Leisure Centre between 10.00am and 2.00pm on Sunday 24 July. For more information please contact Jon Wilkins on 07940434864

Oadby Tennis Club

Will hold introduction to tennis sessions for juniors and adults between 12.00pm and 1.00pm at Parklands leisure centre, Oadby on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 July. For more information please contact Richard Wilson on 07971 457739

Welland Valley Archers

Are running a 'have-a-go at Archery' morning from 10.00am to 1.00pm on Saturday 23 July at Symingtons Recreation Ground in Market Harborough. For further details please contact Mark Lantsbery on 01536 762345.

Leicester Coritanian Athletic Club

Are staging events at Saffron Lane Athletics Stadium on Saturday 23 July. Teams will consist of five people who will compete in the 100m sprint, 400m sprint, long jump and 4x100m relay. The fifth member of the team will be trained to assist in officiating in one or more of the events and the remaining four will compete. Training in all of the above events/officiating will offered from 10.30am with the competition starting at 12.30pm.
