Staff Carers Group
We are a group of carers who get together over tea and biscuits to support each other, to air some of our difficulties and enjoy ourselves, too! We meet on the first Thursday of each month from 5.30pm to 7.00pm in the Woodhouse Room, Charles Wilson Building.
Each member of the Group has a different experience of caring: this might mean looking after someone who lives with us; doing housework and shopping for relatives who live elsewhere; supervising medication; sorting out finances and paying bills; supporting someone with mental ill health.
If you support or care for someone, you might like to join us at our monthly get-togethers to meet others in a similar position. Check out whether the group is for you by phoning Maggie Thomas in Staff Counselling and Wellbeing on 223 1702 or email her at staffcounsel&welfare@le.ac.uk
Leicester University Chamber Choir
We are a small, auditioned choir of between 20 and 30 members. We recruit singers with previous experience of choral singing with the aim of performing lesser-known chamber music to a high standard. Our members are both students and the wider community with a wide age range.
Auditions take place at the beginning of each academic year for new members of any age (see Membership for more details). Auditions simply consist of a voice test and a short piece of sight reading, so please don’t be put off by it or feel you have to prepare anything in advance. However, if you would like to bring a piece to sing we would also welcome this if you are more at ease doing so. Current singers re-audition every three years. If you would like to audition during the term, please contact our President Emma Acklam on su-luchamberchoir@le.ac.uk.
The choir rehearses on Tuesday evenings between 7.00pm and 9.00pm in the Fraser Noble Hall during University term time.
Chess in Leicestershire
There may be strong, or club-level, chess players among University staff and students. If you are such a person and are potentially interested in playing competitively for local chess clubs, please contact Andrew Colman in the School of Psychology amc@le.ac.uk.
Staff Fellowship at the Gatehouse
We meet for an hour each Monday (1.00pm to 2.00pm) - with a simple lunch and an opportunity for shared discussion and support for one another as staff.
Often informal and unprogrammed, but sometimes with a pre-arranged topic, these gatherings are arranged by the ecumenical Christian team of the University Chaplaincy. They are for staff who have some concern for the role of faith in university life - whatever their own faith background.
Do join us if you can. Ring Leicester 285 6493 or email chaplaincy@le.ac.uk for details of any particular week. The Gatehouse is opposite Entrance 2 to the University.
Buddhist Meditation Group
The University Buddhist Meditation Group is open to anyone, staff or student, and meets at the Gatehouse Chaplaincy building on University Road, opposite the end of Mayor’s Walk, every Tuesday lunchtime at 1.00pm.
Everyone is welcome to the group. Sitting Meditation is from 1.15.pm to 1.45.pm and we try to find time for a cup of tea and a chat before or after the formal meditation. We use Buddhist imagery and engage in some brief and minimal ritual but the emphasis is on personal meditation practice. People from any religious faith or with none are very welcome. The meetings would suit anyone who wants the opportunity to sit and practise with others for half an hour. We offer basic meditation instruction and can advise on contact with established local groups in the various Buddhist Traditions. If you would like some meditation instruction please try to arrive as promptly as possible to allow time for some guidance before the sitting session begins. Chairs are available to sit on but anyone wanting to use a cushion or other aid should try to bring their own.
