The University has learnt, with regret, of the passing of Professor Richard Bonney.

Professor Bonney served as Professor of History from 1984 until his retirement in 2006, after which he continued to visit the University as an Emeritus Professor in the School of History. Ordained as a priest of the Church of England in 1997, Reverend Professor Bonney was an expert on religious history and one of the University's most prominent academics.

Professor Bonney worked tirelessly to promote religious pluralism and was particularly interested in the security of South Asia, principally Pakistan. His 2004 study Jihad from Qur'an to Bin Laden continues to be one of the most cited works in the field.

A celebration of Professor Bonney's life will take place at midday on Thursday 17 August at St Guthlac's Church in Knighton, where he served as Minister. Those who attend the celebration are asked to dress colourfully.

Donations in memory of Professor Bonney can be made to The Richard Bonney Literary Fund 2017, which encourages young research students to continue academic studies in Richard's fields of interest. To donate to the fund please contact A.C. James & Son, Independent Funeral Directors, 9 Biddulph Street, Leicester LE2 1BH, Tel: (0116) 254 2900.
