New Storage Services for Researchers and Departments

The University has recently made a significant investment in IT data storage. This investment will improve data storage capacities for all staff, but particularly for researchers, with the advent of the large capacity Research File Storage (R: drive), and departments through their Departmental File Storage (X: drive).

Central to this investment is that the new storage system is easily and cost effectively extendable, so future-proofing the University’s storage services to a large degree.

For Researchers

The Research File Storage (R: drive) will provide researchers with a secure large capacity backed-up data store that’s accessible from PC’s, Linux and Mac’s, and on and off-site. It will also be sharable with colleagues from other universities via an associate account. For users of the current Research Data Storage service(RDS), IT Services will move their existing research data from the existing RDS system to the new service during May and June.

For Departments

The project will also move Departmental data stored on the current X: Drive to a new Departmental File Storage (X: drive) service. IT Services will manage the initial transfer during March and April. This final phase of work will be linked to the Windows 7 upgrade and IT Services will work with Departments as they reorganise their data to comply with new University policies to address security and operability issues.

You’ll be hearing more about these new initiatives in the weeks and months to come but, in the meantime, if you need more information then contact your IT Academic Liaison Manager or email ithelp@le.ac.uk.
