The University of Leicester has agreed to purchase the Nuffield Health Fitness and Wellbeing facility, off University Road, from Nuffield Health. Once the sale completes, the centre, adjacent to the University’s main campus, will offer membership as a health and fitness facility for students, staff and associate members.

Current members of the Nuffield Health Fitness and Wellbeing centre based on the campus will be offered a transfer over to the Green’s gym on Byford Way which was bought by Nuffield Health recently.

The nursery which operates at the site will continue.

Upon completion,  the University of Leicester will join a small group of universities to have two swimming pools, in addition to increased health, fitness and sports facilities.

The University will provide fuller details of its offer to staff, students and associate members, including alumni, in due course.

Questions and Answers

Who can Join?

The University is currently reviewing options for membership and is keen to include as many people as possible who have an association with the University. We will publish clear guidance shortly. We intend to offer membership to:

  • Members of University Staff and their families
  • Students of the University and their families
  • Alumni of the University and their families
  • Staff and Students of Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth I College
  • Other specific groups at the University’s discretion. We will define these shortly but they are likely to include:
      • NHS employees with honorary positions
      • Associate members of the University
      • Former members of staff of the University
      • Conference Delegates
  • Existing members of the facility with specific medical needs

The University of Leicester and Nuffield Health understand that some members of the Leicester fitness and wellbeing centre with medical conditions have seen their health significantly improve due to using the centre on University Road. Having listened to concerns raised by individuals with medical conditions who would be negatively impacted by removing access to this facility, Nuffield Health and the University of Leicester have decided it would be appropriate for a small number of memberships to be continued under the new ownership, rather than transfer to the alternative Nuffield Health facility in Leicester, when there are strong clinical reasons to support this.

Nuffield Health recognises that some chronic conditions mean that a change in location is more difficult for the individual and require special consideration. Therefore, in these few cases, these individuals will be able to remain as members when the fitness and wellbeing centre becomes a University sports facility from April. Existing members only will be considered for qualification for this membership and the decision on clinical need will be made by the Medical Director of Nuffield Health Wellbeing.

Why is the University buying this facility?

With this purchase and our development at Manor Road in Oadby, the University is making its biggest ever capital investment in sport.  These developments place the University of Leicester in the premier league for sport and fitness provision by adding the activities the students want at the place where they want them – on the main site and close to the Halls of Residence. We are shaping minds and bodies for the future and new generations of students, staff and associated members will be able to benefit from our top-class facilities.
