A taste of culture from the English Language Teaching Unit
For staff and students alike, the ELTU is a diverse and multicultural environment. A key priority of their Student Experience Committee (SEC) is to create exciting opportunities, beyond the classroom, whereby our students can come together to celebrate these differences and learn more about each other.
Early on in the term the SEC sought advice from the Student Ambassador, Sujin Lee, in terms of what she thought the best way was for us to "bring our students closer together". Her reply was simply "through food". Thus, came the innovative idea for the student event A Taste of Culture with the simple, yet effective concept "the opportunity to share the flavour of our different cultures through food".
The Taste of Culture event was put on by staff and international students studying on one of our pre-sessional, in-sessional or Erasmus programmes. Those who joined tasted a variety of traditional delicacies as well as experienced traditional clothing, music and Henna.
There was even a vote for the ‘best table’ which was won by Arailym Sauytbekova of Kazakhstan.
