Un-Americans and the Un-American: From 1776 to 9/11

'Un-Americans' and the concept of the 'un-American' have failed to receive any sustained historical analysis, despite scholars’ ongoing fascination with 'Americanism'. This inter- and multi-disciplinary conference draws upon new research in history, politics, literature, sociology, religion, creative writing, visual culture, cultural production and geography to explore the contested meanings and tangled history of a term that was coined in the late eighteenth century, but which still had considerable currency in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

With funding support from a British Academy Research Development Award (BARDA: 52985), a British Association for American Studies (BAAS) Development Award, the US Embassy in London, and the Centre for American Studies at the University of Leicester, this conference forms part of a wider research project which will offer the first sustained analysis of un-Americanism from its origins to its present day uses.
