Accessing SWIFT problem-based learning in Second Life
A guide for preparing for and using the problem-based learning scenario in Second Life to create a medically important protein.

This guide describes how to access the problem-based learning scenario in Second Life where you will create a medically important protein.
So, you need to do the following:
1) Before the session
Before the session you need to register for a free Second Life account. You can do this from any computer at the website: https://join.secondlife.com/
(If you already have a second life avatar go straight to step 2).
After registering, you will be sent a confirmation email that you have to open and follow before you can log in to your new account.
Please make a note of your Username and Password as you will need these every time you use Second Life.
2) Location
Decide if you are going to take part in the Second Life session at the University or from home.
At home:
Download and install the free software from: http://secondlife.com/support/downloads/
At the University:
Due to Second Life not being accessible on the wireless network, the only on-campus location to access Second Life will be at the Beyond Distance Alliance building, 103 - 105 Princess Road East. Locate the office with Google Maps
3) Using Second Life
Once you have created your account and run the Second Life program; you will see a login screen.
Put in the username and password you registered with and paste the following into the "Start At" box: Media Zoo/189/67/30
You are now in our Second Life training area. It should look like this; if it looks like a completely different place then log out and try again, making sure you put
Media Zoo/189/67/30
in the Location box.
The character in front of you represents yourself. Use the arrow keys (or the letters A, D, W and S) to move around. Follow the instructions on the notice in front of you.
Please walk around the maze, completing all the tasks in order. You must make sure that you collect a badge and a HUD at the end of the session and that you wear these before you proceed.
When you have finished the maze, sit on one of the three chairs. When all three are occupied this will the group you will be working with, and you will be teleported to the start. If you are simply exploring Second Life on your own, you will not be able to teleport to the start of the session at this time.
That's it!
